Background

Jonathan Lewis attended Varina High School in Richmond Virginia where he played Center on the basketball team and defensive line on the football team. As a junior, Lewis totaled 96 tackles and 11 sacks. He was named all-metro, all-region, and all-district player of the year. As a senior he finished with 107 tackles and 10 sacks. He became the only player in school history to receive all-metro, all-region, and all-state honors three consecutive seasons as he helped Varina to three straight regional championships and a 46-7 record. He finished his career with over 300 tackles and 46 sacks. He was one of the top defensive line prospects in the nation and was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. Jonathan decided to sign with Virginia Tech where he could play with his brother Kevin, also a defensive tackle who is now with the Hamburg Sea Devils in NFL Europe. Jonathan was an instant contributor, starting 3 games for the Hokies as a freshman. He totaled 56 tackles and 2 sacks on his way to fourth team freshman all-American honors. As a sophomore he started all 13 games, racking up 4 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and career highs in tackles (69) and interceptions (1). As a junior, Lewis finished with 40 tackles and a career high 5 sacks on his way to honorable mention all-acc honors. He had another solid year as a senior in 2005 with 38 tackles and 4 ½ sacks. He was named second team all-acc for his performance as a senior.

Analysis

Jonathan Lewis is a player who has a great deal of experience at the defensive tackle position against good competition, having started for the Hokies since late in his freshman season. During the course of his four years, Jonathan has been a very durable player who hasn’t missed a single game due to injury in his career. He did break his finger in a game once, but he displayed his toughness, playing through the injury. He possesses good strength and is surprisingly athletic for a man his size. He has a quick first step and sheds blocks well. He has the ability to penetrate the line of scrimmage and make plays in the backfield. He has a non-stop motor and plays till the whistle on every single down. He will draw double-teams at times, freeing up his teammates to make plays. Jonathan Lewis isn’t a huge 330 pound defensive tackle but he has decent size and is a solid run stopper who can also get to the quarterback. He should be a late first or early second day pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
