Jonathan Scott was born in Dallas, Texas. His father Ray Scott played tight end at Prairie View A&M and with the New York Jets. Jonathan was a three-sport athlete in high school, playing football, basketball, and track & field. He was a first team all-district football player in both his sophomore and junior seasons. As a senior he didn’t allow a single sack the entire year. He was named first team all-state and second team all-USA for his performance that year. After high school Jonathan went to the University of Texas where he redshirted in 2001. As a redshirt freshman in 2002, Scott moved from left tackle to right tackle where he started the final seven games of the season, earning all-big 12 honorable mention and freshman all-big 12 honors. As a sophomore Scott moved to left tackle where he would start his final three seasons. He was second team all-big 12 that year as well as being named UT’s most improved offensive player. As a junior in 2004, Scott only gave up one sack the entire year on his way to first team all-big 12 honors. In addition to being an excellent football player, Scott is also an excellent student who completed his degree in May 2005 and was constantly on both the school and conference honor roll. Jonathan Scott is a person of high character who has been very active in community service during his time at the University of Texas. He is the type of person you want on your football team and he has a chance to be a very high first round pick in April.
Analysis
Jonathan Scott has a good combination of size, strength, and athleticism for an offensive tackle. He is tall and has the frame to add more bulk in the future. He has long arms (82 inch wingspan) which allow him to keep defenders away from his body. He is an excellent pass blocker who only gave up one sack as a junior in 2004. His athleticism allows him to effectively pull as well as get to the second level in the running game. However he isn’t a dominant run blocker and he lacks the “mean streak” you like to see in an offensive lineman. He displays good technique and has the feet to play left tackle at the professional level. He is an intelligent player and a hard worker. He has proven to be a very durable player, having only missed one game due to injury during his career at Texas. Scott does have problems on occasion against speed rushers and he doesn’t always finish his blocks. These are two areas he will need to work on to excel at the professional level. He was a deep snapper in high school and was the backup deep snapper at Texas. He could help the team that drafts him in that area as well. Jonathan Scott has all the physical tools and intangibles you look for in a left tackle. He has an excellent chance to be a very high first round pick in the 2006 NFL draft. Player News Feed
