Jonathan Welsh was a reserve defensive end until his junior year. He became a starter in 2003 and really broke out with 50 tackles and eight sacks on the year. He had a bit of a down year as a senior but he was plagued with an ankle injury that occured halfway through the season on a play where he sacked Purdue quarterback Kyle Orton. He lacks the size and strength to play defensive end at the professional level so he will most likely make the move to outside linebacker. He has an excellent combination of size and speed for a linebacker. He posted one of the fastest linebacker times at the combine with a 4.51 in the 40. He is a hard worker who gives 100% on evey play and an extremely tough player who will play through injuries. He is an excellent pass rusher with good closing speed getting to the quarterback. He is a very hard hitter and a good tackler. He has the speed and quickness to make plays all over the field and the ability to chase running backs down from behind. He has a tendancy to run around blocks and needs to work on his ability to shed blocks of larger offensive linemen. He is raw in coverage but he does have the speed to cover tight ends and running backs coming out of the backfield. He is a bit of a project, but will make a nice second day pick for a team looking for an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. Player News Feed
