Background

Josh Wilson is the son of the late Timothy Wilson who played fullback at Maryland and blocked for Earl Campbell with the Houston Oilers. Josh attended DeMatha High School on Hyattsville, Maryland where he played football and ran track. He played receiver, cornerback, and served as a return specialist on the football team. As a senior, Josh was the team’s leading receiver, catching 27 passes for 694 yards and 6 touchdowns. He intercepted 5 passes on defense. He was named first team all-county, all-conference, all-metro, and all-state for his play as a senior. He was recruited by Clemson, Syracuse, North Carolina, North Carolina State, and South Carolina; however, he opted to follow in his father’s footsteps and play for the University of Maryland instead. Josh saw action in 11 games as a true freshman, finishing the season with 2 tackles. He saw action in 11 games as a sophomore, starting the final 4 contests. He finished the season with 27 tackles and 3 pass break-ups. Josh started all 11 games at cornerback as a junior, recording a career high 73 tackles on the season. He also had 2 sacks 8 pass break-ups and his first career interception. He blocked 2 punts on special teams. He was named academic all-ACC for his performance in the classroom. Josh once again stated every game as a senior, totaling 55 tackles, 2 sacks 12 pass break-ups and an interception. He averaged 27.3 yards per return as a kick returner and he set a school record for kick return yardage in a season (847). He received the President’s Cup award for academic achievement and was named honorable mention all-ACC.

Analysis

Josh Wilson has been starting at cornerback for Maryland over the past 2 ½ seasons. During that time he has been a very durable player who doesn’t miss much time due to injury. He has an outstanding combination of speed and athleticism for a cornerback. He is an intelligent player and a hard worker. He has fluid hips and his speed allows him to stay with any receiver that lines up against him, as well as recover on the occasion that he is beaten. He is physical for a player his size and he isn’t afraid to step up and support the run. He is also a very good return man who averaged over 27 yards per kick return last season. Wilson lacks great size and strength for a cornerback. He will have trouble matching up against bigger, more physical receivers at the next level. Though he is willing to support the run, Wilson does need to improve in that area as he will miss tackles at times. He lacks great hands and doesn’t come up with many interceptions (2 career ints at Maryland). Though he lacks great size and strength, Josh Wilson has most of the tools to develop into a solid corner at the professional level. He also has the ability to step in and contribute immediately as a return specialist. He should be a late first to early second day pick in the 2007 NFL draft.

COLLEGE PARK - Ideally, a cornerback should be able to run fast, hit hard and stay both focused and confident - even after an opponent completes a long pass on him.
