Background

Justin Durant is the brother of former North Carolina quarterback, Darian Durant. Justin attended Wilson Bay High School in Florence, South Carolina where he earned all-area and all-region honors both his junior and senior seasons. As a senior, Justin was also named to the all-state team. He started at linebacker in the annual North Carolina vs. South Carolina Shrine Game, finishing the game with 7 tackles. Justin accepted a scholarship to Hampton where he saw action in all but the three games he missed due to injury. He had a sack and led all freshmen in tackles with 32 stops on the year. As a sophomore, Justin started 11 of 12 games, finishing the season with 99 tackles, 3 sacks, and 3 interceptions. He was named conference defensive player of the year at the conclusion of the season. As a junior, Justin led the team in sacks with 5 and led the conference in tackles with 124. He also had 1 interception, 2 fumble recoveries and 2 pass breakups. As a senior, Justin finished with 98 tackles and a sack, bringing his career totals to 353 tackles, 10 sacks and 4 interceptions.

Analysis

Justin Durant has a ton of experience, having started at linebacker the past 3 ½ seasons for Hampton. Justin is an intelligent player and a good leader. He is an athletic linebacker with the ability to make plays all over the field. He is a hard hitter and a solid wrap-up tackler. He takes good angles to the ball carrier and excels at making plays in the open field. He has the athleticism to be effective in coverage. Justin has a great deal of experience, but all of it came against lower level competition. He lacks great size and strength for a linebacker and as a result, he has a difficult time getting off blocks of bigger, stronger offensive linemen. He’s a versatile player who could play inside or outside. He would need to be in the right system where he would be protected by the defensive tackles to be an effective middle linebacker. He will most likely project as a weakside linebacker in the NFL due to his physical limitations. Justin Durant should be among the top small school prospects selected this year. He should be a first day pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
