Justin Medlock attended Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, California where he played football and soccer. Justin was an all-league soccer player his sophomore and senior seasons. As a junior kicker on the football team, Justin was successful on 7 of 13 attempts with a long of 47 yards. All six of his misses came from 50 yards and beyond. As a senior, Justin was successful on 4 of 6 field goal attempts with a long of 48 yards. His two misses came from distances of 47 and 50 yards. 18 of his 20 kickoff attempts went for touchbacks. As a punter he averaged 43.1 yards per kick with a long of 73 yards. He received all-county and all-league honors for the second consecutive season. Justin was considered to be one of the top 10 kicker prospects in the nation. He accepted a scholarship to UCLA where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt. He served as the team’s kicker the following season, converting all 26 extra point attempts and 14 of 19 field goal attempts with a long of 48 yards. He led the team in scoring with 68 points and was named to several all-freshman teams following the season. As a sophomore, Justin converted 42 of 43 extra point attempts and 15 of 20 field goal attempts with a long of 52 yards. He led the team with 87 points on the year. He was received the team’s most outstanding special teams player award and was named first team all-PAC Ten. As a junior, Justin converted 50 of 51 extra point attempts and 13 of 17 field goal attempts with a long of 51 yards. He was named first team all-PAC Ten for the second consecutive season.
Analysis
Justin Medlock has a good deal of experience having started at kicker for the past four seasons at UCLA. He is a left-footed, soccer-style kicker with good leg strength. He has been deadly accurate inside of 40 yards the past two seasons, converting 19 of 21 attempts. He is 38 of 45 for his career inside of 40 yards. He has converted 24 of 32 career attempts from 40-49 yards and 6 of 9 from 50 yards or more. The past two seasons he has been outstanding from 50 yards and beyond in limited action, converting 3 of 4 attempts. Justin has good leg strength for field goals, but will probably need to go to a team that won’t rely on him as a kickoff specialist. Another question with Medlock would be his character. He was arrested in December 2005 after he got into a car accident. When police arrived on the scene they found a 20 year old female in the passenger seat with a broken neck. They later picked Medlock up a mile and a half away. He was charged with DUI and hit and run. He was sentenced to three years probation and was suspended, causing him to miss the Sun Bowl. Despite his off the field incident, Justin Medlock is one of the better kicker prospects in the 2007 NFL draft. He has a chance to be a late round pick or sign as an undrafted free agent.
