Background

Justin Rascati attended Buchholz High School in Gainesville, Florida where he played football and basketball. He earned all-state honors in both football and basketball as a junior. As a senior he passed for 2,223 yards and 22 touchdowns, leading the team to a 12-1 record. Justin broke former Florida Gators and Atlanta Falcons quarterback Doug Johnson’s career passing records with 5,033 passing yards and 45 touchdown passes. He was named first team all-state and was selected to play in the Florida-Georgia all-star game. He accepted a scholarship to Louisville where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt. He saw action in five games as the backup to former Carolina Panthers quarterback Stefon Lefors, completing 14 of 24 passes for 177 yards and 1 touchdown with 2 interceptions. Justin transferred to James Madison University where he immediately became the team’s starting quarterback. He completed 185 of 283 pass attempts for 2,045 yards and 14 touchdowns with just 5 interceptions as a sophomore. He also rushed for 375 yards and 10 touchdowns. He set a school record for completion percentage, completing 65.4% of his passes on the season. He would break his own record the following season, completing 149 of 214 attempts (69.6%) for 1,822 yards and 17 touchdowns with just 5 interceptions. He also ran for 306 yards and 5 more scores. As a senior, Justin completed 153 of 231 pass attempts and set career highs in passing yards (2,045) and touchdowns (20) with just 6 interceptions on the year. He also rushed for 518 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Analysis

Justin Rascati has been the starting quarterback for the past three seasons at James Madison University since transferring from Louisville in 2004. He is an intelligent player with a good work ethic. He has a good combination of size and athleticism for a quarterback. He has good decision-making ability, taking what the defense gives him and he rarely turns the ball over. He stands tall in the pocket and will deliver the football with a defender in his face. He displays good accuracy on his short to intermediate range passes and he does have enough arm strength to make all the throws required of a quarterback at the professional level. He has good pocket presence and the athleticism to avoid the rush, get out of the pocket and make a throw on the run. He has proven he can make a play with his feet when needed with 1,200 rushing yards over the past three seasons. Although he began is career at Louisville, Justin played the past three seasons against lower-level competition at James Madison. He lacks great height and doesn’t have a cannon for an arm. Justin Rascati is a small-school quarterback with the ability to move up draft boards with good pre-draft workouts, much like former Furman and current Green Bay Packer quarterback Ingle Martin did a year ago. He has a chance to be a second day pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
