Kamerion Wimbley attended Northwest High School in Witchita, Kansas where he played defensive end, linebacker, receiver, quarterback and punter at one time or another. By the end of his high school career, Wimbley was considered one of the top 5 high school players in the state of Kansas and one of the top prospects in the nation. He was recruited by Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Nebraska, but opted to play for Florida State instead. Kamerion finished high school a semester early so he could enroll at Florida State the following spring. He came to Florida State as a 210 pound defensive end but has added 45 pounds of bulk since then. As a freshman, Wimbley was one of eight freshmen to earn playing time for the Seminoles, serving primarily as a reserve defensive end and special teams player. He finished his first season with 17 tackles on the year. As a sophomore, Wimbley earned more playing time and the first start of his career. He finished with 38 tackles, 2 ½ sacks, and 1 forced fumble on the season. Kamerion was once again a reserve as a junior. He started two games on the year finishing with 27 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. Following spring practices in 2005, Wimbley was named most dependable defensive end and won the Hinesman award for most dominating player. Kamerion earned a starting spot as a senior, replacing current New York Giant Eric Moore at right defensive end. He responded with his best season, totaling 24 tackles and 7 ½ sacks, despite missing significant time due to a knee injury. He earned second team all-ACC honors for his play as a senior.
Analysis
Kamerion Wimbley lacks a great deal of experience as a starter, having only started three games prior to his senior season. He has good speed and is very quick off the snap of the ball which allows him to get by most opposing offensive tackles. He is an excellent pass rusher with good closing speed getting to the quarterback. His speed and quickness allows him to chase down the ball carrier from behind in the backfield. He has proved to be a very durable player over the first three years of his career at Florida State, not missing a single game due to injury. He did miss significant time with a sprained knee as a senior. Kamerion Wimbley lacks the ideal size of a defensive end in the NFL. He has added 45 pounds of bulk since coming to Florida State in 2002. He needs to continue to bulk up and he has a good frame to work with. Due to his lack of size, Wimbley doesn’t hold up well at the point of attack. He has problems shedding blocks of larger offensive linemen. He relies too much on his speed and needs to improve his technique. He is more of a one-dimensional pass rusher and needs to improve his run stopping ability to be an every down player at the professional level. Kamerion Wimbley is raw but has a ton of upside. He could be a candidate to switch to outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme or serve as a situational pass rusher until he bulks up and develops the rest of his game. His pass rushing ability and upside could make Wimbley a first day pick in the 2006 NFL draft. Player News Feed
