Analysis

Kenneth Pettway spent his first two seasons primarily in a backup role at Southern Arkansas prior to transferring to Grambling State. He made an instant impact for the Tigers, recording seventy tackles, five sacks and a forced fumble. Pettway had another outstanding season as a senior and was named to the All-SWAC team for his efforts. He has good height and long arms which allow him to deflect passes or knock the ball out of the quarterback’s hand. He uses his quickness to get by opposing offensive linemen and has good closing speed getting to the quarterback on the pass rush. He has a very quick first step which allows him to effectively beat most offensive linemen off the snap. He is a very physical player who hits hard but he needs to improve his tackling technique to become a better all-around defender. He has very good speed but he does have a tendency overpursue at times. He has shown the ability to have an impact on special teams as well, blocking two kicks this past season. Lack of size for a defensive end and experience as a linebacker, as well as the low level of competition he played against could have an adverse effect on his draft position. He should test well in workouts. He consistently put up good numbers running and lifting during his time at Grambling. How he performs at the combine and his pro day could be the determining factor on where he is drafted. He may need to add some bulk if he is going to be a full-time defensive end at the professional level but he does have a good frame to work with. At this point he could become a good situational pass rusher from the defensive end position in a 4-3 or an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. He is a little raw but his talent cannot be ignored. He could hear his name called during the latter portion of day two, making him only the second Grambling State player drafted in the last nine years (Scotty Anderson, 5th round, 2001).
