Analysis

Kyle Eckel is a 240 pound running fullback in the mold of Mike Alstott. Eckel has been a big part of a turnaround that has seen an 0-10 Navy team of a few years ago turn into a team that has gone to two straight bowl games. Eckel has a good combination of size and speed for a fullback and is a really tough player. He's the type of player that gives 100% at all times and plays every down as though it were his last. He is an excellent inside runner and has put up some big numbers in Navy's option offense. He isn't a great open field runner, but he will run over smaller linebackers and defensive backs when given the chance. He is a good blocker and an extremely hard hitter. One downside is his pass catching ability. He hasn't had very many opportunties to catch the ball out of the backfield in Navy's offense. The biggest factor surounding Eckel leading up to the draft will be his military commitment. Upon graduation he has a five year commitment to serve in the Navy. This could be reduced to two years if he agrees to serve six years in the reserves following his active duty commitment. Fullbacks typically aren't drafted very high and Eckel may drop even further since the team that drafts him will have to wait a couple years for him to join the team.
