Analysis

Kyle Orton has been the starting quarterback for the Boilermakers for the better part of the past three seasons. He started a few games as a true freshman and was the starting quarterback for the majority of his sophomore year (he was benched at one point). He has been the full-time starter the past two seasons and at times has been one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. He has ideal size for an NFL quarterback, but lacks the speed to consistently avoid the rush. He is a great leader and a tough player who has played though injuries in the past. He makes good decisions and improved his touchdown to interception ratio every year, finishing with a ratio of better than 5-1 as a senior. He has a strong arm but his accuracy isn’t great on his deep passes. He is deadly accurate on short to medium range passes. He has a slow release, but he will stand in the pocket and deliver the football with defenders in his face. He put up some pretty good numbers in the spread offense at Purdue where he operated almost exclusively out of the shotgun. He will need to adapt to playing under center and reading the defense as he drops back. Drew Brees played in the same offense at Purdue and although it has taken him a few years, he has made a successful transition to the NFL game. Orton could have the same type of struggles early on so I wouldn’t expect him to step in and be successful immediately at the professional level. Orton's stock has been on the decline recently. He is a late second to early third round prospect at the moment.
