Background

Kyle Williams attended Ruston High School in Ruston, Louisiana where he played football, baseball and threw shot put and discus on the track and field team. As a senior, Williams recorded 78 tackles, 7 sacks, 1 interception, forced 6 fumbles and recovered 4 more on his way to district MVP honors and 5A Louisiana Defensive MVP. Kyle was considered to be one of the top 10 defensive linemen in the nation and one of the top 15 overall prospects in the state of Louisiana following his senior season. He accepted a scholarship to LSU where he was one of just two freshmen to see playing time on the defensive side of the ball. He totaled 7 tackles and 2 sacks in limited playing time his first year in Baton Rouge. As a sophomore, Williams finished with 41 tackles 4 sacks and an interception, despite only starting the second half of the season at defensive tackle. The following season he led all LSU defensive linemen in tackles with 57. He also recorded a career high 6 sacks on the year. He was named second team all-SEC for his performance as a junior. As a senior, Williams totaled 61 tackles and 4 ½ sacks on his way to all-SEC and all-American honors.

Analysis

Kyle Williams has a good amount of experience, having started at defensive tackle the past three seasons on an outstanding LSU defensive line. He has proven to be a very tough, durable player during that time. He showed his toughness against Georgia in 2004. Even though he fractured his wrist in pregame warm-ups, Williams still played the entire game. He is an extremely hard worker with a non-stop motor. He has a quick first step, does a good job of penetrating the line of scrimmage, and makes a lot of plays in the backfield. Kyle doesn’t have ideal size or athleticism, but he makes up for that with outstanding technique. His lack of size will cause him to have trouble against larger offensive linemen once they get their hands on him. Kyle Williams is a blue collar player who lacks ideal size and athleticism for the position, but he always gets the most out of his ability. He is the type of player that isn’t likely to become a star at the next level, but he will work hard and possibly develop into a solid starter at the defensive tackle position. He projects as a late first or early second day pick on draft day.
