Background

Kyle Young attended Fallbrook Union High School in Fallbrook Union, California. Kyle played mulitple positions on the offensive line at Fallbrook and was named first team all-area for his efforts. He was recruited by schools such as: Colorado, Colorado State, San Diego State, and Kansas State, but he opted to attend Fresno State instead. Kyle sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt before earning a starting position the following season. He started all 14 games in 2003, earning honorable mention all-WAC honors in the process. As a sophomore, Young once again started all 12 games for the Bulldogs. At the conclusion of the season he was named second team all-WAC for his performance. As a junior, Young developed into one of the better centers in the nation. He once again started all 13 games, leading an offensive line that only gave up 14 sacks on the season. He was named first team all-WAC following the season. Young entered his senior season as the top center in the nation with a 39 consecutive games started streak. His season and his streak were cut short in November when he was suspended from the team due to academic issues.

Analysis

Kyle Young has tons of experience, having started the past four seasons at center for Fresno State. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player who hasn't missed a single game due to injury in his career. He proved his toughness as a redshirt freshman in 2003 when he suffered a cracked rib in the first series against Nevada and continued to play the rest of the game at a high level. Young has a great combination of size and strength for an offensive lineman. He is a hard worker with a motor that does not stop. He is a good all-around center who is equally effective at both pass and run blocking. He is strong at the point of attack, does a good job of sustaining his blocks, and can dominate opposing defensive linemen at times. He shows good athleticism for an interior offensive lineman--He has the ablility to block on the move and can get to the second level in the running game. Kyle is a bit tall for a center which can be a disadvantge for him when it comes to getting leverage on his opponents. Another problem is he doesn't always finish his blocks. His senior season was cut short when he was suspended due to academic issues. Kyle Young is a player who could project as a guard or center at the next level. He is a talented player who will probably fall to the second day in part due to off the field issues.
