Background

LaRon Landry is the brother of Baltimore Ravens’ safety Dawan Landry. LaRon attended Hahnville High School in Ama, Louisiana, where he played quarterback and defensive back on the football team. As a senior he passed for 1,639 yards and 16 touchdowns while rushing for 693 yards and 12 more scores. He totaled 8 interceptions on defense, helping Hahnville to an 11-2 record. He was named first team all-state and was considered to be one of the top prospects in the nation. He accepted a scholarship to LSU where he made an immediate impact, starting 10 games as a true freshman. He finished with 2 interceptions and led the team in tackles with 80 stops on the year. He was named second team all-SEC and first team freshman all-American for his performance in 2003. As a sophomore he totaled 92 tackles, 3 sacks, and led the team with 4 interceptions. He was named second team all-SEC once again and was a member of the SEC academic honor roll. As a junior, LaRon totaled 69 tackles, 1 sack, 3 interceptions and 8 pass break-ups. He had a chance to be a first round pick had he entered the 2006 NFL draft, but he opted to return to LSU for his senior season instead.

Analysis

LaRon Landry is a versatile player who has played free safety, strong safety, and cornerback during his time at LSU. He has a great deal of experience against top competition, having started with the LSU Tigers in the SEC since his true freshman season. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player who rarely misses time due to injury. He is an intelligent player and a good leader. He has a good combination of height and speed for a safety. He is good in coverage and rarely gets beat deep. He is better in zone coverage than man coverage. He is a physical safety who will step up and support the run. He is a very hard hitter and a great open-field tackler who takes good angles to the ball carrier. He is also very effective on the blitz with good closing speed getting to the quarterback. LaRon is a bit thin for a safety, but he does have the frame to bulk up and increase his strength. I would like to see him make more plays on the football in coverage. He does have a tendency to be over aggressive at times, which can lead to a big play going the other way. LaRon Landry is a good all-around safety who could play either safety position at the next level, although he does project better as a free safety in the NFL. He should be one of the top defensive players off the board and a first round pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
