Background

Le Kevin Smith attended Stratford Academy in Macon, Georgia where he played football and won state titles in both discus and shot put on the track team. He primarily played defensive tackle on the football team although he did play offensive tackle on occasion. He totaled 87 tackles and 2 forced fumbles as a senior, on his way to all-city and all-state honors. He was considered to be one of the top defensive tackles in the nation and chose Nebraska over Auburn and Florida State. Le Kevin sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt while recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL. He saw action in all 14 games the following season, totaling 42 tackles and 1 sack on the year. As a sophomore he started twelve games, missing one game due to injury. He finished the season with a career high 44 tackles. Le Kevin led all Nebraska defensive linemen with 43 tackles as a junior. He also had 2 ½ sacks on the year as well. He had another solid season as a senior, totaling 43 tackles and setting career highs in sacks (6) and interceptions (1).

Analysis

Le Kevin Smith has a great deal of experience, having started the past three seasons at Nebraska. He has a good combination of size and athleticism for a defensive tackle. He is a great run defender who has a decent first step, is able to penetrate the line of scrimmage, and makes a lot of plays in the backfield. He is strong at the point of attack and will take on double-teams, freeing up his teammates to make plays. Le Kevin hasn’t been much of a pass rusher and didn’t get many sacks prior to totaling six as a senior this past season. He doesn’t have a great motor and he has a questionable work ethic. Durability could be a cause for concern since Smith has had surgery on both knees during his time at Nebraska. Le Kevin Smith is a player who could be a great run stuffer when properly motivated. He has the ability to play and be effective in both the 3-4 and 4-3 defensive schemes. He should be a second day pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
