Background

Leon Hall attended Vista High School in Vista, California where he played football and ran track. He played quarterback, receiver, and cornerback during his time at Vista. As a junior he finished with 26 tackles and 4 interceptions, earning second-team all-conference honors. As a senior he totaled 51 tackles and 3 interceptions on defense while also catching 24 passes for 520 yards and 3 touchdowns on offense. He was named first team all-county and all-conference at both cornerback and receiver at the conclusion of his senior season. He totaled 103 tackles and 9 interceptions over the course of his career at Vista. Leon was widely considered to be one of the top 15 cornerback prospects in the nation and was selected to participate in the U.S. Army all-American bowl. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Michigan where he made an instant impact as a true freshman, totaling 26 tackles, 3 pass breakups and 3 interceptions, seeing his name added to various freshman all-American teams along the way. As a sophomore, Hall started 9 games, finishing with 48 tackles, 8 pass breakups and 2 interceptions. He was named honorable mention all-Big Ten for his play as a sophomore. Hall developed into one of the better cornerbacks in the nation as a junior, totaling 61 tackles, 2 sacks, and a forced fumble, while leading the team in pass breakups (9) and interceptions (4). He was named second team all-Big Ten following his junior season.

Analysis

Leon Hall has a great deal of experience against top competition, having started the past four seasons at cornerback for the Michigan Wolverines in the Big Ten. He is a great all-around corner who does a lot of things well. Hall is a true “playmaker” in the defensive backfield who has excellent cover skills. He is an aggressive, physical corner who has enough speed and athleticism to stay with just about any receiver that lines up across from him and he possesses good ball skills. He locates the ball well and almost always puts himself in good position to make a play on it while it’s in the air. He has good body control when going up for the ball and has soft hands. Hall is also a good on the blitz and is an aggressive run defender with solid tackling technique. He also has the ability to contribute as a punt returner as well. He lacks elite size and speed and will rely too much on his athleticism at times, causing him to give up a big play. At this point Leon Hall is probably the most complete cornerback in the draft. He has a good chance to become the first cornerback selected and a top 10 pick in the 2007 NFL draft.

Entering the 2006 season, cornerback Morgan Trent was expected to be the weak link of an otherwise-loaded defense. But for most of the season, the 6-foot-1 cornerback was a pleasant surprise. He shutdown opposing receivers and solidified an record-breaking unit that led the Wolverines to an 11-0 start and a No.

CINCINNATI -- Jets quarterback Chad Pennington didn't say "take that" when asked about the 57-yard strike he uncorked to wide receiver Laveranues Coles for a touchdown on the Jets' third offensive play of the game yesterday in a 38-31 loss to the Bengals, but he came close.
