Background

Lorenzo Booker attended St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura, California where he was a three-year starter at running back. As a junior he rushed for 3,103 yards and 49 touchdowns on his way to California State player of the year honors. As a senior he rushed for 2,878 yards and 50 scores. He also caught 16 passes for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns on the year. He led his team to a 42-0 record during his three years as a starter. Lorenzo finished his career with 8,502 rushing yards and 137 touchdowns, both state records. He was considered to be the top running back prospect in the nation and was recruited by Notre Dame, USC, and Washington, but he opted to attend Florida State instead. As a true freshman, Booker finished third on the team with 334 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns, despite missing several games due to knee and ankle injuries. As a sophomore, Lorenzo saw action in all 12 games, finishing second on the team in rushing with 887 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was named the team’s most outstanding offensive player by the coaches following spring practices in 2005. He went on to lead the team in rushing as a junior with 552 yards and 4 touchdowns on the year. He also caught 38 passes for 329 yards and 2 more touchdowns.

Analysis

Lorenzo Booker has seen significant playing time against top competition since his true freshman season at Florida State. He has the speed and quickness to get outside and turn the corner. He has excellent change of direction ability and is a threat to take it the distance every time he touches the football. He is an elusive runner in the open field who has a knack for making defenders miss. He is a capable receiver out of the backfield with just average hands. He isn’t a very physical runner between the tackles and he has a difficult time breaking tackles. Lorenzo lacks ideal size and strength to be a featured back at the professional level. He would benefit from bulking up and increasing his strength. He has had some minor injuries and never really carried the load by himself at Florida State—That along with his lack of ideal size makes you question whether he could hold up as a featured back over the course of a 16 game NFL season. Though not an elite back, Booker has a chance to be selected on the first day of the 2007 NFL draft.
