Round: 4 | Pick: #18 | Overall: #117 | Team: Detroit Lions Background
Manny Ramirez attended Willowridge High School in Houston, Texas where he played center on the football team. He was named first team all-district in both his junior and senior seasons. He was considered to be one of the top ten center prospects in the nation and was recruited by schools such as: Kansas State, Houston, UTEP, Iowa State, and Texas Tech. He opted to attend Texas Tech where he would sit out the 2002 season as a redshirt. He started 10 of 13 games at right guard the following season, giving up just 1 ½ sacks in a pass-oriented offense. The following spring, Manny set the school’s bench press record with a 525 pound lift. He went on to start all 12 games at guard as a sophomore in 2005. During the spring, Manny broke his own bench press record set the previous year with a 550 pound lift. Manny started at guard for the third consecutive season as a junior, earning second team all-conference honors in the process. After another solid season as a senior, Manny Ramirez was named honorable mention all-conference at the conclusion of the season.
Analysis
Manny Ramirez has a ton of experience, having started at guard for Texas Tech since his freshman season. During that time he has been a very durable player who rarely misses time due to injury. He is a hard worker and a team leader both on and off the field. He has an excellent combination of size and strength for an interior offensive lineman. Manny owns the Texas Tech bench press record with a 550 pound lift. He is a tough, physical lineman who is very strong at the point of attack. He dominates opponents in the running game and does a good job of finishing his blocks. He is a better run blocker than pass blocker but coming from a pass-oriented offense, he is still above average in pass protection. He lacks great athleticism and has trouble blocking moving targets at times. He isn’t very versatile and will be limited to playing guard at the next level. After playing in the spread offense at Texas Tech the past four seasons, Manny will have to adjust to playing in a pro-style offense. Manny Ramirez is one of the best run blockers in the draft and should be a first day pick in the 2007 NFL draft. Player News Feed
