Analysis

Mark Clayton took a redshirt in 2000, then came on to break almost every freshman receiving record at the University of Oklahoma in 2001. He became one of the top receivers in college football his junior year, posting 83 catches for over 1,400 yards and 15 touchdowns. At 5'11" 187lbs, Clayton lacks prototypical size for an NFL receiver, but he makes up for his lack of height with excellent leaping ability. He has good speed, can score from anywhere on the field, and is probably the best player at the wide receiver position in college football when it comes to his open field running and ability to get yards after the catch. He has sure hands, runs precise routes and does a good job of adjusting to the football when it is in the air. He has proven to be a great leader both on and off the field and has a tireless work ethic. He may get manhandled by some of the larger defensive backs at the professional level. It may be a good idea for him to bulk up some and add strength to increase his effectiveness in the NFL. There aren't many negatives to talk about when you are talking about Mark Clayton. His biggest weakness is his size, which most likely will hurt his draft position a little bit. His big play ability, however, cannot be ignored. I expect someone to overlook his size and take him towards the end of the first round in April.
