Background

Mark Setterstrom was a two-sport athlete at Northfield high school in Minnesota, excelling in football and wrestling. He was on of the top heavyweight wrestlers in the state, posting a 27-1 record as a senior. In football he was a standout offensive lineman who also recorded 127 tackles, 6 sacks and 5 fumbles forced on defense in his career. As a senior Mark was an all-state football player and an academic all-state athlete for his classroom accomplishments. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Minnesota where he would major in Civil Engineering and immediately earned the starting left guard spot on the football team. He earned freshman All-American honors for his play as a true freshman and went on to all-big ten honorable mention honors as a sophomore. By the end of his junior season, Setterstrom had developed into one of the best interior offensive linemen in the country. He was a first team all-big ten selection that year and he entered his senior season as one of the top offensive line prospects for the 2006 NFL draft.

Analysis

Mark Setterstrom has tons of experience as an offensive guard, been a starter since his true freshman year at left guard for the Gophers. At 295lbs, He is a little undersized for an NFL guard. He needs to continue to add bulk and increase his strength to avoid being pushed around by some of the larger defensive tackles in the NFL. He is an extremely athletic player for an offensive lineman who blocks well on the move. He is one of the best pulling guards in the nation and does a good job of blocking in space. He isn’t a player who is going to maul a defensive lineman in the running game. He relies more on excellent technique and athleticism to defeat his opponent. Coming from a run-oriented offense, Setterstrom may need to work on his pass protection technique. During his time at Minnesota, Setterstrom has proven to be an extremely durable player, having not missed a single start in his four years as a starter. He is a tough, hard working player who plays hard on every single down. Mark Setterstrom is one of the best run-blocking guards in the nation and should be one of the top interior offensive linemen off the board on draft day.
