Mason Crosby’s father, Jim Crosby was a fullback for UTEP in the 1970’s. Mason attended Georgetown High School in Georgetown, Texas where he played football and soccer. He was a two-time all-district soccer player, scoring 14 goals as a sophomore and 17 as a junior. He played kicker, punter, and free safety on the football team. He punted 60 times for a 37 yard average with a long of 64 yards and 8 punts inside the opponent’s 20 yard line. On defense, Mason totaled 58 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 4 pass break-ups. He was named first team all-district and second team all-region for his play as a junior. As a senior he was good on 7 of 11 field goal attempts with a long of 59 yards (3rd longest in state history). He was successful on 23 of 25 extra point attempts. He punted 40 times for an average of 39.8 yards with a long of 61 yards and 10 punts inside the 20 yard line. On defense he totaled 78 tackles, 3 interceptions, 3 pass break-ups and 3 forced fumbles. He was named first team all-district and all-central Texas for his play as a senior. Mason accepted a scholarship to the University of Colorado where he would start and set a school freshman record with 52 points scored, breaking the previous record of 48 points. He successfully converted 7 of 9 field goal attempts and 31 of 34 extra point attempts. His two field goal misses came from 47 and 53 yards. 26 of his 37 kickoffs on the year were touchbacks. As a sophomore, Mason converted 23 of 29 field goal attempts and 31 of 32 extra point attempts. He led the nation with six field goals of 50 yards or more, including a career long of 60 yards. 48 of his 67 kickoffs went for touchbacks. He was named first team all-Big Twelve for his play as a sophomore. As a junior, Mason led the team in scoring with 94 points, converting on 22 of 29 field goal attempts with a long of 58 yards and all 32 extra point attempts. At one point he made a school record 10 consecutive field goal attempts. He was named first team all-Big Twelve, first team all-America and Big Twelve special teams player of the year. He was successful on all 19 extra point attempts and 19 of 28 field goal attempts as a senior with a long of 56 yards. 7 of his 9 misses were from 50 yards or more with several of them being over 60 yards.
Analysis
Mason Crosby has a ton of experience against top competition, having kicked for the past four years for Colorado in the Big Twelve. He has an extremely strong leg with the ability to kick field goals up to 60 yards, as well as kick the ball through the endzone on kickoffs in a regular basis. He is an accurate kicker who is nearly automatic from 40 yards and in, making 39 of 43 career attempts from less than 40 yards. As expected, his accuracy goes down a bit beyond 40 yards, but he has been successful on 19 of 27 career attempts between 40-49 yards including 13 of 16 the past two years. He is 13 of 25 in his career from 50 yards or more but several of those misses have come from distances greater than 60 yards. His career long is 60 yards. Mason Crosby has a rare combination of leg strength and accuracy for a kicker. He is arguably the best kicker to come out of college since former first round pick Sebastian Janikowski in 2000. He will be a day one starter as a place kicker and kickoff specialist by the team that drafts him. He will be a first day pick in the 2007 NFL draft. Player News Feed
