Background

Mathias "Kiwi" Kiwanuka is an extremely athletic defensive end whose family is from Uganda. He has the Ugandan presidential seal tatooed on his back in honor of his grandfather (Benedicto Kiwanuka) who became the first prime minister of Uganda in 1961 before being assasinated during a violent overthrow of the government in 1972. Mathias' father left the family when he was just ten years old and his mother had to work two jobs to keep him and his brother and sister in catholic school. Kiwanuka, a talented athlete, was the captain of the basketball team in high school before accepting a football scholarship to Boston College.

Kiwanuka redshirted in 2001 before making an impacted in 2002 with 44 tackles and 5 sacks on the year. He began to catch the attention of NFL scouts as a sophomore when he proved to be an all-around defensive end with 83 tackles, 13 sacks and 5 pass breakups. He earned all-big east honors that year and was named big east defensive player of the year as a junior when he had 67 tackles 11 1/2 sacks and 2 interceptions. He had an excellent chance of being a first round pick in the 2005 NFL draft, but instead he decided to return to Boston College for his senior season.

Analysis

He has developed into one of the better pass rushers in college football and with his height (6'7") and long wingspan, he can be difficult to throw over. In addition to being a monster pass-rusher, Kiwanuka has also developed into an excellent run defender as well. He has the frame to add more strength and bulk and he may want to do so to handle larger offensive tackles at the professional level. He needs to improve his technique and work on getting better leverage at the point of attack. Kiwanuka is a talented player and is one of the better all-around defensive end prospects coming out in the draft. He has a ton of upside and he should be among the top defensive players selected in the 2006 NFL draft.
