Analysis

Matt Jones is one of the most interesting prospects in this years NFL draft. He is probably one of the best athlete's I've ever seen coming out of college. Jones has the size of a tight end (6'6", 242), the speed of a wide receiver (4.39 in the 40), and yet he has played his entire career at quarterback. He ran for over 2,500 yards in his four years, more career rushing yards than any other quarterback in SEC history. After his senior season, Jones turned down opportunities to play quarterback in a couple postseason all-star games for the opportunity to go to the Senior Bowl to display his all-around talent. He had an impressive week in Mobile where he worked out at quarterback, receiver, tight end, and deep snapper. He had an eye opening combine workout where he ran times of 4.39 and 4.41 in the 40. Jones recently worked out primarily at tight end during his pro day workout and reportedly performed well at the position. As a receiver, Jones has the size to beat the jam and outmuscle even the larger defensive backs as well as the speed to beat even the faster defenders deep. He displayed good hands at the senior bowl, combine and his pro day, but will need to work on technique and route running to be effective at the professional level. If the team that drafts him decides to use him as a tight end, run blocking is another area he will need to work on to be successful. Matt Jones is probably the best athlete in the draft but he's going to need more than pure athletic ability to be a successful player in the NFL. He will probably take a few years to develop, but Jones has all the physical tools to become a successful pass catcher at the professional level. A team could take a chance on him towards the end of day one.
