Background

Matt Lentz attended Brandon High School in Ortonville, Michigan. He was a member of the football team and the track team. He set the school record for discus and was the regional discus and shot put champion as a junior. In football he was a three-year starter who played on both sides of the ball. He was named first team all-county, all-metro and all-state in each of his final two seasons. As a senior defensive tackle, Lentz totaled 87 tackles and 10 sacks on the year. He finished his career with 191 tackles, 14 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and 11 fumble recoveries. He also blocked 5 kicks in his career. He was considered one of the top prospects in the state and accepted a scholarship to the University of Michigan. After not seeing any playing time as a freshman in 2001, Lentz saw action in nine games the following year. In 2003, Lentz earned the starting right guard job for the Wolverines where he started all 13 games. He started all 11 games the following season, earning second team all-big ten honors. Lentz had a streak of 27 consecutive games started which ended early on in his senior season when he missed the Eastern Michigan game due to injury. He returned to his right guard position the following week where he started the rest of the season. Lentz was named first team all-big ten for his play as a senior.

Analysis

Matt Lentz has a good deal of experience against top competition, having started at right guard for the Michigan Wolverines over the past three seasons. He has a good combination of size and strength for a guard and the frame to get even bigger. He is an outstanding run blocker who does a good job of finishing his blocks. He has good athleticism for a big man—He can get to the second level and take out a linebacker and can pull when needed. He is a tough player who has the “mean streak” you look for in an offensive lineman. He needs to work on his pass protection—He isn’t as good of a pass blocker as he is a run blocker and he does struggle in space. He needs to improve his technique some, but Matt has the ability to develop into a solid guard at the next level. He should be a second day pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
