Background

Max Jean-Gilles grew up in Miami, where his parents immigrated to from Hati. Although he was an extremely big boy growing up, he didn’t begin playing football until the 10th grade. In high school Max was a three-time team captain, two-time team MVP and was named to the all-state team in his junior and senior seasons on the offensive line. He also played on the defensive line and blocked seven kicks on the special teams unit during his time in high school. After his senior season, Jean-Gilles was considered by many to be the top offensive line prospect in the nation. He was recruited by teams such as: Recruited by: Miami, Nebraska, Ohio State, Florida, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida State, and Notre Dame, but he opted to attend the University of Georgia instead. He saw significant playing time as a freshman before taking over the starting left tackle job as a sophomore in 2003. In 2004 Jean-Gilles moved to guard to solidify the Bulldogs’ interior offensive line. After making the All-SEC team two consecutive years, Jean-Gilles had a chance to be a first day pick in the 2005 NFL draft. However after careful considerations, he decided to return to Georgia for his senior season.

Analysis

Max Jean-Gilles is a very versatile player who has started at both guard and tackle at Georgia, playing both positions at a high level. In the past few years Max has gone from a quiet freshman to a vocal leader in the locker room. He has excellent size and strength for an interior offensive lineman and has developed into one of the most dominating run blockers in college football. He does an excellent job of finishing his blocks in the run game. He has long arms which help him keep defenders away from his body but he does need to improve his technique when it comes to pass protection. He moves well for a player his size but he may lack the athletic ability to play tackle at the professional level. He would be a better fit at guard in the NFL as he is susceptible to speed rushers off the edge when he lines up at tackle. Controlling his weight could be a cause for concern as he currently tips the scales at 340lbs. Max Jean-Gilles is a dominating player at the guard position and has a chance to be the top interior offensive lineman available in the 2006 NFL draft.
