Analysis

Michael Griffin has been a big-time contributor on the Longhorn defense since his true freshman season, starting the past two years at strong safety. He is an intelligent player who is quick to read and react to what the offense is doing. He combines decent size with good speed and athleticism for a safety. He has fluid hips and a good backpedal. He has good range and exceptional ball skills. He has the speed that allows him to recover on the occasion that he is beat. He has a nose for the football and always seems to be around the action. Griffin is aggressive in run support. He takes good angles to the ball carrier and is a hard hitter. He excels at making tackles in the open field. He can be it bit overaggressive at times which will cause him to miss tackles. He is also a standout special teams player who did a good job of blocking kicks at Texas. He also lacks great size for a safety and as a result, some scouts may question his durability. Michael is a physical defensive back who is good in both coverage and run support. His ability to contribute immediately on special teams will only add to his draft day value. He should be a first to early second round pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
