Michael Johnson is the younger brother of Reggie Brown who played at Texas A&M and was a first round pick by the Detroit Lions in 1996. Reggie played two seasons for the Lions before suffering a career ending injury. Michael attended Pflugerville High School in Pflugerville, Texas. He went on to play at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas where he played two seasons. He totaled 68 tackles and 6 sacks in 2004 and was considered to be one of the top JUCO prospects. He transferred to Arizona where he immediately became a starter. As a junior, Johnson started 11 games, totaling 60 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 4 pass break-ups. Three of his interceptions came against Oregon State, one of which he returned 40 yards for a touchdown. Michael earned pac ten player of the week honors as a result. He was named honorable mention all-pac ten at the conclusion of the season. As a senior, Johnson started 10 of 12 contests, racking up 47 tackles, 1 interception and 4 pass break-ups on the year.
Analysis
Michael Johnson has been starting at safety for Arizona over the past two years since transferring from Tyler (Juco). He has a good combination of size and strength for a safety. He has good instincts and the range to make plays sideline to sideline. He has good hands for a safety and the ability to cover most receivers man-to-man when needed. Johnson is a physical receiver who isn’t afraid to step up and support the run. He is an aggressive player who displays good tackling technique. He can be a bit overaggressive at times which causes him to miss some tackles. He will has trouble shedding blocks at times. Michael lacks elite speed and will get beat deep on occasion. Michael Johnson only has two years of division I experience, having spent his first two years playing junior college ball. He still hasn’t fully developed and he does have a good deal of upside. He should contribute immediately on special teams for the team that drafts him and he could develop into a solid safety in time. At this point he looks to be a second day pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
