Background

Mike Hass was born in Portland, Oregon. He is one of four children, with his three siblings all being sisters. Mike attended Jesuit High School where he not only played football, but was also a third baseman on the school’s baseball team. As a senior, Hass caught 79 passes for 1,739 yards and 21 touchdowns, including 7 touchdowns in a single playoff game. He was named Oregon’s 4A offensive player of the year and was named to first team all-state at both receiver and safety. Despite being one of the most productive high school players in the nation, Hass didn’t receive a single scholarship offer from a division I school. Hass attended Oregon State where he walked on to the football team hoping to earn a scholarship. He sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt, before serving the following season as a special teams player. In 2003, Hass really climbed up the depth chart. He began the spring as the team’s 5th receiver. By summer Hass was up to 4th and he moved up to 3rd by the start of the season. An injury forced him into a starting position, a position he would hang on to for the next three seasons. After beginning 2003 as the team’s 5th receiver, he finished the year as the team’s 1,000 yard receiver, totaling 44 receptions for 1,013 yards and scoring 7 touchdowns. 2004 was a record-breaking season for Hass. Against Boise State, Hass caught 12 passes (tied school record) for 293 yards (Pac-10 record). Against Arizona State, Hass caught 14 passes, breaking his previous single-game record of 12. By the end of the season, Hass had set single-season school records for receptions (86) and receiving yards (1,379), on his way to being named first team all Pac-10 and third team all-American. As a senior, Hass broke his own single-season records, totaling 90 receptions for 1,532 yards on the year. He became the first player in Pac-10 history and just the 10th in NCAA history to record three consecutive 1,000 yard receiving seasons.

Analysis

Mike Hass has good size and average speed for a receiver. He runs precise routes and does a good job of using his body to put himself in position to make the catch. He has excellent hands and does a good job of adjusting to poorly thrown balls. Hass is a tough, competitive player who isn’t afraid to go over the middle and make a tough catch in traffic. Mike Hass has good strength and is a very effective downfield blocker. The main question with Hass is his speed. Although he does have deceptive game speed, Mike doesn’t have the timed speed that will impress scouts. His ability to gain separation against some of the faster defensive backs in the NFL is questionable. He won’t be able to make many plays down the field and he isn’t very elusive after the catch; however, he knows how to get open and has some of the best hands in college football. If Hass falls late in the draft it will be for the same reasons he wasn’t offered a scholarship coming out of high school—He lacks the measurables everyone is looking for in a receiver. Mike is a hard worker and a great leader who has all the intangibles you could want in a player. He is a gamer who simply gets open and makes plays. He will never be a #1 receiver in the NFL, but could develop into a very good #2 or #3 receiver—a solid possession guy who makes the big catch on third down and moves the chains.
