Background

Naufahu Tahi is of Tongan descent. He is one of four children and his family moved to Utah just eleven years ago. Naufahu attended Granger High School in West Valley City, Utah. He was named all-league as a sophomore and all-league and all-state as a junior and senior. He rushed for over 5,700 yards during his four years at Granger and he set the state record for rushing touchdowns. He was considered to be one of the top five prospects in the state and was recruited by Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Washington, and Nebraska before opting to attend BYU. Naufahu made an immediate impact as a true freshman in 1999, rushing for 445 yards and 2 touchdowns on 102 carries. He left school to serve a two year mormon mission in Jacksonville, Florida and sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt after returning. He saw action in every game as a sophomore, rushing for 77 yards and 1 touchdown on 34 attempts. He also caught 14 passes for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns. He received five starts at running back as a junior in 2004, rushing for 339 yards and 5 touchdowns on 93 attempts. He added 139 yards and a touchdown on 16 receptions. Naufahu had his best statistical year as a senior. He carried the ball 97 times and set career highs in yards (497), rushing touchdowns (6), receptions (41) receiving yards (375), and touchdown receptions (2).

Analysis

Naufahu Tahi is a versatile player with excellent size for the fullback position. He has started at both fullback and running back during his four years at BYU and he has been a very durable player over that time period. He is a hard worker and is always trying to improve his game. He has great hands and is a very good receiving threat out of the backfield. He received a lot of carries at BYU and has proven to be an effective runner with good vision. He is strong enough to break tackles and will make people miss on occasion. He isn’t a dominating blocker and will need to improve that aspect of his game to become a more complete fullback. He is also older than your average rookie since he left school for two years to go on a mormon mission. He will be 25 years old in October. Naufahu Tahi is a bit of a tweener. He lacks the speed to project well as a running back and he lacks the blocking ability of a fullback. He may need to be in the right system to be successful. He has a chance to be a late round pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
