Background

Nick Folk attended Notre Dame High School in Sherwood Oaks, California where he played football and soccer. He was a member of the league all-academic team in both football and soccer and he was a Scholar Athlete award winner. He served as team captain on the soccer team, earning all-league and all-valley honors. He earned all-league honors in football as a junior. As a senior he was successful on 5 of 9 field goal attempts, earning first team all-league, all-valley, and all-CIF honors. Nick accepted a scholarship to the University of Arizona where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt. He saw action in 10 games the following season, starting the final four contests. He finished the season 8/8 on extra points and 0/3 on field goal attempts. He was named honorable mention Pac Ten all-academic. As a sophomore, Nick was successful on all 18 extra point attempts and 8 of 13 field goal attempts, including a career long 53 yard boot. He was named honorable mention Pac Ten all-academic for the second consecutive year. As a junior, Nick was successful on 31 of 33 extra point attempts and 7 of 11 field goal attempts with a long of 51 yards. He was named honorable mention all-Pac Ten and Pac Ten all-academic. As a senior, Nick was successful on all 22 extra point attempts and 15 of 20 field goal attempts with a long of 52 yards. He earned first team all-Pac Ten honors as a senior.

Analysis

Nick Folk has a good deal of experience, having started for Arizona for the past three seasons. He is a versatile player who can kick field goals and extra points, serve as a kickoff specialist, and even punt. He is a right legged, soccer-style kicker with a strong leg. He is a very good kickoff specialist who will get a lot of touchbacks. His leg strength has been good from as far away as 53 yards in the regular season, but he hit a 62 yard attempt in Arizona’s spring game last year. He is a bit inconsistent, having only made 63.8% (30 of 47) of his career field goal attempts. He doesn’t just miss long field goals. He misses short kicks as well. 7 of his 17 career misses came from distances shorter than 40 yards. He was 8 of 16 from 40-49 yards and 3 of 5 from 50+ in his career. His ability to step in and punt when needed should add to his value; however, he is too inconsistent to warrant a selection in the draft. He should be signed as an undrafted free agent and get a opportunity to compete for a job in camp.
