Background

Prince Ahadzie (P.J.) Daniels, Jr. attended Elsik High School in Houston, Texas where he played running back on the football team for four years. As a senior, Daniels rushed for over 1,600 yards and was named team MVP. He was invited to play in the Houston North-South all-star game following his final season at Elsik. He wasn’t highly recruited coming out of high school. He earned a spot on the Georgia Tech team as a walk-on where he sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt. He finished the following season with 255 yards on 72 attempts and 2 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 5 passes for 57 yards and 2 more touchdowns on the year. P.J. put together his finest season as a sophomore, leading the ACC in rushing with 1,447 yards on 283 carries. He scored 10 rushing touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 88 yards and another touchdown. He was named first team all-ACC for his performance as a sophomore. He also received academic all-ACC honors for his performance in the classroom. As a junior, P.J. rushed for 714 yards on 154 attempts and scored 8 touchdowns, despite missing nearly half the season due to injury. P.J. was named academic all-ACC for the second consecutive year. As a senior, P.J. rushed for 930 yards on 198 carries, scoring 3 touchdowns on the season. He also caught 21 passes for 174 yards. P.J. missed the Miami game due to a bruised sternum. He was named second-team all-ACC for his play as a senior.

Analysis

P.J. Daniels has average size and good strength for a running back. He is an intelligent player with good instincts. He has good vision and is a tough, between the tackles runner. He runs hard and has the strength to break tackles and gain additional yardage. P.J. was an effective outside runner in college but he may not have the speed to be as effective in that area at the professional level. He lacks the speed to break many long runs. He isn’t very elusive in the open field and he won’t make many defenders miss. He isn’t the greatest receiver—He has just average hands and needs to improve his route running. He has had some fumbling problems in college as well. Durability could be a cause for concern as P.J. has missed time due to injuries in each of the past two seasons. P.J. doesn’t have a great deal of upside and could be a late round pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
