Background

Parys Haralson attended Madison Central High School where he helped his team to a 15-0 record and a 5A Mississippi state championship as a sophomore. He was named all-city for his play that season. As a junior, Madison Central went to the playoffs with a 9-2 record. Haralson recorded 80 tackles, 12 sacks and picked off 2 passes on his way to all-city and all-state honors. As a senior, Parys totaled 148 tackles 10 sacks and 1 interception, leading his team to a 10-3 record. He was named all-state for the second straight year and all-city for the third straight year. Parys was considered to be one of the best prospects in the state of Mississippi. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Tennessee where he made an immediate impact as a true freshman, recording 25 tackles and one sack on the year. He underwent minor foot surgery in the offseason, but was at full strength by the start of his sophomore year. Three weeks into his second season at Tennessee, Haralson had earned a spot as a starting defensive end. He started ten games that year, racking up 44 tackles and 4 ½ sacks. As a junior, Parys was named defensive team captain and totaled 43 tackles, 7 sacks and 2 forced fumbles, on his way to second team all-SEC honors. Parys finished off his career at Tennessee with another fine performance as a senior. The two-time defensive team captain had 45 tackles, 8 ½ sacks, and 3 forced fumbles. Over the past couple years; Parys Haralson really made a name for himself as one of the top pass rushers in the SEC.

Analysis

Parys Haralson has a ton of experience against top competition, having started at defensive end for the past three seasons in the SEC. He is an exceptional pass rusher who has a very quick first step. He is a tough player with a non-stop motor. He works hard and he plays every down as though it were his last. He lacks ideal size and strength for the position but he does a good job of using leverage to his advantage. He displays good lateral quickness as well as good closing speed getting to the quarterback. He knows his assignments and does a good job of reading and reacting to what the offense is doing. Haralson has proven to be an excellent leader both on and off the field. He has been voted defensive team captain by his teammates each of the past two seasons and has been named to the NCAA Good Works team for his community service. Haralson’s biggest problem is his size. He doesn’t shed blocks very well. If he doesn’t beat the opposing lineman off the snap of the ball, he will usually be taken out of the play. He also needs display good tackling technique on a more consistent basis. He needs to bulk up and increase his strength to be an effective every down defensive end at the professional level. Haralson could be moved to outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. Otherwise he could be limited to a role as a situational pass rusher from the defensive end position.
