Background

Pat Ross attended St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio where he played football and threw shot put and discus for the track and field team. He was named second team all-state as a senior defensive lineman after totaling 60 tackles and 7 sacks on the year. He was also named first team all-city and all-southwest Ohio after his final season. He was team MVP and named best defensive lineman in the Greater Catholic League as well. Following his senior season, Ross was invited to play in the Big 33 Football Classic, which put the Ohio all-stars against the Pennsylvania all-stars. He accepted a scholarship the Boston College where he sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt. In 2002, Ross saw significant playing time as current New England Patriot Dan Koppen’s backup at the center position. In the spring of 2003, Pat Ross earned the team’s starting center job, a position he would hold onto for the next three years. After an excellent junior season, Ross was named second team all-big east in 2004. Prior to his senior season, Ross was honored by being named offensive team captain. He earned second team all-ACC honors for his play in 2005.

Analysis

Pat Ross has a good deal of experience, having started for Boston College at the center position for the past three seasons. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player, not missing a single start to injury. He is a very good leader on the field who was named team captain prior to his senior season. He is a hard worker who is constantly trying to improve his game and he gives his all on every single down. Pat is a smart player who knows his assignments and displays outstanding technique. He isn’t a powerful, dominating blocker so he has to rely on his technique to defeat most defenders. He is an excellent run blocker, but he needs to work on his pass blocking to become a more complete center. He is an athletic lineman who does a very good job of blocking on the move. He does lack ideal size and strength for an interior offensive lineman. He may need to bulk up and improve his strength but he does have a good frame to work with. Pat Ross is a technically sound player with all the intangibles you could want. He comes from a program that is well-known for developing NFL caliber offensive lineman such as Dan Koppen, Damien Woody, and Chris Snee. He should be selected sometime on the second day of the 2006 NFL draft.
