Background

Paul Williams’ brother J.D. is a former Fresno State player and secondary coach. J.D. was the first ever first round pick to come out of Fresno State when the Buffalo Bills made him their top pick in 1990. He is currently the secondary coach at the University of Washington His other brother Curtis played football for the Washington Huskies. Curtis was paralyzed during a game against Stanford in 2000. He passed away tragically in 2002 due to complications from his injury. Paul attended Avenal High School in Avenal, California where he was a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball, and running track. He was an all-league basketball player and a sprinter on the track team. He played receiver and defensive back on the football team, earning all-league honors his sophomore and junior seasons. As a senior, Paul totaled 953 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns. He intercepted 13 passes on defense and returned three kickoffs for touchdowns. He was named league defensive player of the year at the conclusion of the season. Paul wanted to stay close to home, opting to accept a scholarship to Fresno State after he completed his high school career. He sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt before returning to catch 3 passes for 20 yards in seven games the following season. As a sophomore, Paul saw action in every game as a reserve receiver, catching 5 passes for 70 yards on the year. As a junior, Paul led the team in receiving with 43 receptions for 729 yards and 7 touchdowns. He was named first team all-Wac after leading the conference with 17 yards per reception. Paul was slowed as a senior, missing nearly half of the season due to injury. He finished the season with 21 receptions for 229 yards and a touchdown.

Analysis

Paul Williams has been starting at receiver for the Fresno State Bulldogs for the past two seasons, having served as a backup his first two years. He has an excellent combination of size and speed for the position. His speed allows him to stretch the field while his size and strength allows him to matchup against bigger, more physical defensive backs. He will go up and fight for the ball. He has exceptional hands and ball skills. He does a good job of catching the ball at its highest point. He has good leaping ability and body control. Once he has the ball in his hands, Williams is a good open field runner who excels at getting yards after the catch. Paul only has one full year of experience as a starter, having missed a good portion of his senior season due to injury. On that note, another concern will be his durability. He needs to improve his blocking but he does have the size and strength to be effective in that area. He has good hands for the most part, but he will have his moments where he drops catchable balls. Paul Williams lacks experience and is still a bit raw. He is very talented and he has a great deal of upside. He should be a second day pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
