Background

Quinn Pitcock attended Piqua High School in Piqua, Ohio where he played football and threw shot put and discus on the track and field team. He played defensive tackle on the football team, helping the team to a 12-3 record as a senior. He was named first team all-state in each of his final two years at Piqua. Quinn was considered to be the top defensive tackle prospect in the state and accepted a scholarship to play at Ohio State where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt. He saw action in all 13 games as a reserve defensive lineman in 2003, finishing with 17 tackles and 3 sacks on the year. Quinn earned a starting job as a sophomore and had a very productive year, totaling 49 tackles, 2 sacks, and his first career interception. He started all 12 games as a junior and finished with 28 tackles and a sack on the year. His blocked punt against Northwestern was returned for a touchdown by linebacker A.J. Hawk. Quinn had another good year as a senior and did surprisingly well as a pass-rusher.

Analysis

Quinn Pitcock has a great deal of experience against top competition, having started at defensive tackle for the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Big Ten for the past three seasons. He has a good combination of size and strength for a defensive tackle. Pitcock is a great run defender. He is strong at the point of attack and gets off blocks well. He is able to penetrate into the backfield and he makes a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage. One of the concerns regarding Pitcock going into his senior season was his pass rush ability, however, he has developed into a very good pass rusher, recording 8 sacks as a senior. Pitcock isn’t an exceptional athlete and he can be inconsistent at times. He may need to play for a coach who will keep him motivated. Quinn Pitcock has been moving up draft boards after a fine senior season. He is a first day talent who could be selected as high as the second round on draft day.

Columbus -- Nothing about the Little Animal is as it seems. In the same way, little about James Laurinaitis is as Dick Butkus seemed, although Laurinaitis was named the winner of the Butkus Award, symbolic of the nation's best collegiate linebacker.
