Round: 3 | Pick: #25 | Overall: #89 | Team: Carolina Panthers

Background

Rashad Butler attended Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida where he helped his team to the class 5A state finals as a senior. He was considered to be a top 5 offensive tackle prospect and one of the top 25 overall players in the state of Florida after his senior season. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Miami where he sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt. He spent the 2002 season primarily as a reserve tackles, seeing action in eight games on the year. As a sophomore he was the backup right tackle, seeing action in 10 games, starting 4 games. Prior to his junior season, Rashad suffered an ankle injury which sidelined him for the first three games of the season. He returned to start the final eight games at left tackle, replacing Eric Winston who was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Rashad moved back to right tackle as a senior when Eric Winston returned to his left tackle position.

Analysis

Rashad Butler is a versatile player with a good deal of experience, having started at both left and right tackle for the Miami Hurricanes. He is an athletic tackle with quick feet and long arms which help him in pass protection. He displays good technique and has the ability to get to the second level in the running game. He doesn’t hold up very well at the point of attack, getting pushed around by bigger stronger defensive ends at times. He needs to bulk up and increase his strength to be effective at the next level and he does have a good frame to work with. He lacks the “mean streak” you like to see in an offensive lineman but he does have a good deal of upside. With his athleticism, Rashad could project as a left or right tackle in the NFL and his upside should make him an early day two pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
