Rob Sims is the son of former Cleveland Brown’s defensive tackle, Mickey Sims. Rob attended Nordonia High School in Macedonia, Ohio where he played football, basketball, and threw shot put for the track and field team. As a senior, Rob finished fourth in the state in the shot put. He was a three-year starter on the football team, starting at guard his first two years before moving to tackle as a senior. He was named first team all-Ohio his final season and was offered a scholarship to play at Ohio State. He began his freshman season as the backup to starting left tackle Ivan Douglas. He made his first start three weeks into the season when Douglas went down with an injury. He finished his freshman season with five starts. As a sophomore, Rob earned the starting job and went on to start every game with the exception of the Fiesta Bowl. As a junior he started 11 of 12 games, missing the Michigan State game due to injury. Up to that point he had a streak of 20 consecutive starts in regular season games. He spent some time at guard as a senior before finally settling in at right tackle.
Analysis
Rob Sims is a versatile lineman who has started at both tackle positions and played some guard in college. He has a great deal of experience against top competition, having started the past three seasons for the Buckeyes. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player who rarely misses a game due to injury. Rob is a good pass blocker who has the ability to handle speed rushers coming from the outside. He is an athletic lineman who blocks well on the move. He is a smart player who knows all the blocking assignments and displays good technique. He has a strong upper body and good footwork. He is a good run blocker who can open some holes and has the ability to get to the second level. Although he has been a solid lineman, Rob Sims has been a bit inconsistent and he hasn’t been as dominating as he should be. He also lacks the “mean streak” you like to see in an offensive lineman. He doesn’t have ideal height for a tackle and he could project as a guard or right tackle in the NFL. Rob Sims is a solid player who does have a good deal of upside. He should be an early second day pick in the 2006 NFL draft. Player News Feed
