Robert McCune only has two years of starting experience, having spent two seasons as a reserve and special teams player, after redshirting in 2000. He made the most of his time on special teams and was named special teams player of the year in 2001. In 2003 he finally got his chance to start and really broke out with 143 tackles and 4 sacks. He had another good year as a senior with 115 tackles 2 sacks and 1 interception. Although he does lack ideal height for a middle linebacker in the NFL, McCune has a nice combination of size, speed and strength. He has the speed to make plays all over the field and can be very effective on the blitz. He needs to work on using his hands more when attempting to shed blocks of opposing offensive linemen. He hits pretty hard and is a solid tackler for the most part although he doesn’t always finish his tackles. In coverage he has just average ball skills but he does have the speed and agility to cover most tight ends as well as running backs coming out of the backfield. He served three years in the National Guard and spent time in both Kuwait and Korea, giving him a late start in college. He is older than the average NFL prospect and will turn 26 years old on March 9th. He should develop into a good starting linebacker in a year or two and has a good chance at being selected on the first day of the 2005 NFL draft.
