Background

Robert Meachem attended Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he played basketball and football. He played point guard, helping the basketball team to two state championship titles. Robert played receiver on the football team, totaling 543 yards and 10 receiving touchdowns as a senior. He rushed for 531 yards and 8 more scores, leading the team to a 13-1 record and a state championship appearance. He was named Oklahoma’s Gatorade Player of the Year and first team all-state. He was considered to be one of the top receiver prospects in the nation and the top overall prospect in the state of Oklahoma. Robert accepted a scholarship to the University of Tennessee where he sat out the 2003 season as a redshirt after suffering a knee injury before the season. He returned to lead the team in receiving yards the following season, finishing with 25 receptions for 459 yards and 4 touchdowns on the year. As a sophomore, Robert once again led the team in receiving, hauling in 29 passes for 383 yards and 2 touchdown receptions. Robert had a breakout season as a junior, setting career highs in receptions (71), yards (1,298), and touchdown receptions (11). He was named first team all-SEC for his performance as a junior. Robert still has another year of eligibility left; however, he has opted to skip his senior season to enter the 2007 NFL draft.

Analysis

Robert Meachem has experience against top competition, having started at receiver for the Vols in the SEC. He has an excellent combination of size, speed, and athleticism for a receiver. He has long arms and good sized hands. His size and strength allow him to effectively defeat the jam at the line of scrimmage. He has reliable hands and is a good short to intermediate range receiver who can also use his speed to stretch the field vertically. He is quick in and out of his breaks and will go up and get the ball at its highest point. Once he has the ball in his hands, he is strong enough to break tackles and athletic enough to make defenders miss. He can be elusive in the open field and he does a good job of getting yards after the catch. He is just an average blocker and can still improve in that area. He prefers to work the sidelines rather than going over the middle and taking a big hit. He will need to improve his route running at the next level. Robert Meachem only had one great season in college after average seasons his first two years at Tennessee. He has all the physical tools scouts look for in a receiver. Right now he looks like a late first to early second round pick but with good workouts he could move as high as the mid-first round in the 2007 NFL draft.
