Round: 2 | Pick: #27 | Overall: #59 | Team: Carolina Panthers

Background

Ryan Kalil’s father Frank Kalil was a center at Arkansas and Arizona in the late 70’s and early 80’s. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1982 and went on to play in the USFL in 1983 (Arizona Wranglers) and 1984 (Houston Gamblers). Ryan attended Servite High School in Corona, California. Ryan earned a starting center job as a junior and also served as the team’s long snapper. He was named second team all-county and honorable mention all-state following his senior season. He didn’t allow a single sack in his final two years of high school. Ryan accepted a scholarship to USC where he saw action in six games as the team’s backup center as a true freshman in 2003. He earned a starting job the following season, starting every game. He earned the team’s “Courage” award that season. He continued to start at center as a junior, earning first team all-Pac Ten honors in the process. He also received the school’s Bob Chandler award.

Analysis

Ryan Kalil has a great deal of experience having started the past three years at center for the USC Trojans. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player who rarely misses time due to injury. He is an extremely hard worker who is constantly trying to improve his game. He is an intelligent player who understands blocking schemes and almost always makes the proper calls at the line of scrimmage. He is a very good pass blocker who rarely gives up a sack. His athleticism allows him to get to the second level and hit a moving target in the running game. Ryan lacks ideal size for a center and he may get overpowered by bigger, stronger defensive tackles at times. He would benefit from bulking up and increasing his strength. Ryan Kalil is one of the best centers in the nation and should be a first day pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
