Background

Ryan O’Callaghan attended Enterprise High School in Redding, California. The tackle was such a dominating force on the offensive line that they moved him around the line to put him in better position to help out on each play. Ryan wasn’t very big into football back then and he almost quit at one point. His family talked him into staying on the team. As a senior, O’Callaghan was already 320 pounds. He had 74 pancake blocks on the year and didn’t allow a single sack, helping his team win the North State CIF championship. O’Callaghan was also used at tackle and end on the defensive side of the ball. He was considered to be a top ten offensive line prospect in the west and played in the California/Florida all-star game. He accepted a scholarship to play at the University of California where he sat out the 2001 season as a redshirt. He served as a reserve offensive tackle for Cal in 2002 before earning a starting job the following season. He had surgery on both shoulders which limited him in practice during the spring of 2004. Ryan broke his wrist six plays into the season opener against Air Force and played the rest of the season with a cast. He received the Bob Tessier award for the most improved offensive lineman and the Andy Smith award for the most playing time that season. At the end of the year he was named first team all-Pac10 for his play at right tackle. As a senior O’Callaghan won the Morris Trophy awarded to the best offensive lineman in the Pac-10. He was forced to sit out the Las Vegas Bowl with a sprained ankle.

Analysis

Ryan O’Callaghan is a huge offensive tackle. He came to Cal at 320 pounds and now weighs around 360. Ryan has a great deal of experience having started the past three seasons at right tackle for Cal. He is very strong and is a true mauler in the run game who helped pave the way for J.J Arrington’s 2,000 yard season in 2004. He is also an excellent pass protector who displays excellent technique and rarely gives up a sack. Ryan has proven to be a very tough player during his college career. He broke his wrist in the season opener as a junior and played the rest of the season with a cast. He had surgery on both shoulders prior to his junior season which may need to be checked into. He lacks the athleticism to play left tackle in the NFL which will decrease his value a bit. He will either play right tackle or guard in the NFL. If he is switched to guard, at 6-7 he will have to work to stay low to get under the pads of shorter defensive tackles. Wherever he plays, Ryan O’Callaghan should be able to come in and start immediately. He should be a first day pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
