Background

Sabby Piscitelli attended Boca Raton High School in Boca Raton, Florida where he played football and baseball. Sabby played free safety and receiver on the football team. He didn't begin playing the sport until his junior season when he caught 11 passes for 200 yards. As a senior he cought 22 passes for 420 yards and 4 touchdowns. On defense he led the league in interceptions with 7 and sacks with 10. He was named first team all-area, all-county, all-conference, and second team all-state. He was named team MVP and district defensive player of the year. He accepted a scholarship to Oregon State where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt. He saw action in all 12 games the following season, primarily on special teams. He finished the year with 6 tackles, 1 interception, and 1 pass break-up. Sabby earned the team's starting strong safety position as a sophomore. He started all 12 games, totaling 54 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 8 pass break-ups. He was named honorable mention all Pac-10 for his play as a sophomore. As junior, Sabby finished with 53 tackles, 8 pass break-ups, and a team leading 4 interceptions. He was named honorable mention all-Pac 10 for the second consecutive season. Sabby saved his best for his senior season, setting career highs in tackles (75), interceptions (5), and pass break-ups (11). He was named first team all-Pac 10 at the conclusion of his senior season.

Analysis

Sabby Piscitelli has a ton of experience, having started at safety for Oregon State for the past three seasons. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player who has not missed a single game due to injury. He is very tough and will play through minor injuries. He is an intelligent player and a great leader in the secondary. He is a hard worker with a non-stop motor. He has a good combination of size, speed, and athleticism for a safety. He has very good instincts and the range to make plays all over the field. He has good hands and ball skills in coverage. He will step up and support the run and he is a decent tackler. Piscitelli looks a bit stiff in coverage. Though he has good speed for a player his size, he lacks elite speed and he will get beat deep. He doesn't always take the best angle to the ball carrier and he needs to improve his tackling technique. He lacks great strength for a player his size and he has problems shedding blocks as a result. Sabby Piscitelli has the size to move to weakside linebacker, but he would have to significantly improve his run defense to make such a move. He should be a mid-round pick in the 2007 NFL draft.
