Samson Satele is the nephew of former San Diego Charger Alvis Satele. He is the cousin of Hawaii OL Hercules Satele and DE Melila Purcell. Samson attended Kailua High School on Oahu Island (Hawaii) where he was a three-sport athlete as a member of the football, basketball, and track and field teams. On the basketball team, Samson was named first team all-league and team MVP as a junior. He was named first team all-league once again as a senior. He was named Kailua’s athlete of the year in 2001. As a senior on the football team, Samson was named first team all-league and all-state. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Hawaii where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt. He started all 14 games the following season (1 at left tackle, 13 at left guard), giving up only one sack on the season. He was named second team all-WAC for his play as a freshman. As sophomore, Samson started all 13 games (3 at center, 10 at left guard). He was named second team all-WAC for the second consecutive season. Samson played exclusively at left guard as a junior, starting all 12 games. He only gave up two sacks on the season and was named first team all-WAC for his efforts. Samson moved to center full-time as a senior where he earned first team all-WAC honors for the second consecutive season.
Analysis
Samson Satele is an experienced, versatile offensive lineman who has started at left tackle, left guard, and center for Hawaii over the past four seasons. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player who simply doesn’t miss time due to injury. He is an intelligent player who also displays the “mean streak” you like to see in an offensive lineman. He is a great pass protector who uses his hands well and only gave up a handful of sacks in his career at Hawaii. He is also a very good run blocker who is strong at the point of attack. His athleticism allows him to get to the second level in the running game. Satele lacks great size for an interior offensive lineman. He can get pushed around at times and he would benefit from bulking up and increasing his strength. He played in the spread offense at Hawaii so he doesn’t have as much experience at run blocking as he does at pass blocking. He may need to work on his run blocking to become a more complete player at the next level. He bounced around between several positions during his time at Hawaii and would benefit from being able to concentrate on one position. Samson Satele is a versatile offensive lineman who could project as a guard or center in the NFL. He has a good chance to be a first day pick in the 2007 NFL draft. Player News Feed
