Scott Chandler is the brother of former Iowa quarterback Nathan Chandler. Scott attended Carroll High School in Southlake, Texas where he played football and basketball. As a junior receiver, Scott caught 37 passes for 587 yards and 7 touchdowns, helping Carroll to a 10-5 record. As a senior he caught 68 passes for 1,790 yards and 18 touchdowns on his way to first team all-district and honorable mention all-state honors. He helped Carroll to a 16-0 record and a state championship his senior season. Scott accepted a scholarship to play receiver at Iowa where he saw action in 6 games as a true freshman despite not catching any passes. As a sophomore, Scott was converted to tight end. He saw action in all 12 games, totaling 24 receptions for 324 yards and 2 touchdowns. His junior year would be a breakout season for Chandler. He caught a career high 47 passes for 552 yards and 2 touchdowns. As a senior, Chandler caught 46 passes, setting career highs in yards (591) and touchdowns (6). He was named second team all-big ten for his play as a senior.
Analysis
Scott Chandler has been the starting tight end at Iowa for the past two seasons. During that time he has proven to be a very durable player who rarely misses time due to injury. Scott is an intelligent player and a hard worker. He has proven to be a team leader over the past couple seasons. He is a very good receiving tight end with soft hands. He does a good job of using his size to gain separation from defenders. He will take a hit and hang onto the football. He is a good athlete who can be elusive after the catch. He will break tackles and gain additional yardage. His combination of height and receiving skills make him an excellent redzone target. Scott is a converted receiver who has only been playing the tight end position for three years. He needs to improve his run blocking to become a more complete tight end at the next level. He would benefit from bulking up and increasing his strength and he does have the frame in which to do so. Scott has improved as a blocker but he needs to do a better job of getting leverage against his opponents—A difficult task considering his height. Scott Chandler is a one-dimensional pass catching tight end at the moment, but he does have a good deal of upside. He has a chance to be selected on the first day of the 2007 NFL draft.
