Background

Stanley McClover attended Dillard High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where he played defensive end on the football team. As a junior, Stanley totaled 100 tackles and 13 sacks, earning second team all-county and all-state honors. As a senior he finished with 102 tackles and 22 sacks, earning first team all-county and second team all-state honors. He was considered to be the top defensive end prospect in the state and was selected to participate in the California-Florida all-star game. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Auburn where he was forced to sit out the 2003 season as a partial qualifier. He saw action in all 13 games the following season, totaling 35 tackles and a team leading 7.5 sacks and 4 forced fumbles. He was named to the SEC all-freshman team and honorable mention all-SEC for his play that season. As a sophomore, McClover totaled 31 tackles, 8 sacks, and 1 forced fumble on the season. Stanley McClover is a rare case of a sophomore being eligible for the NFL draft due to the fact that he was a partial qualifier in 2003. He still has two years of eligibility left, but he has opted to leave school early to enter the 2006 NFL draft.

Analysis

Stanley McClover has been an impact player for the Auburn Tigers since his redshirt freshman season. He is an athletic player with an extremely quick first step which allows him to beat most offensive tackles off the snap of the ball. He is an excellent pass rusher with good closing speed getting to the quarterback. He has great speed and change of direction ability. Although he lacks great size, McClover has good strength and gets good leverage on larger offensive linemen. He is a hard worker with a non-stop motor. He is a sure tackler and an extremely hard hitter who makes alot of plays behind the line of scrimmage. Stanley lacks ideal height and size for a defensive end and he can be a liability against the run. He would need to bulk up and increase his strength to be as effective at the next level. He needs to be stronger at the point of attack. He has problems shedding blocks of larger, stronger offensive linemen. He has a tendency to overpursue against the run at times, effectively taking himself out of plays. He relies on pure athleticism alone too much and will need to improve his technique in the NFL. Stanley McClover only started two seasons at Auburn and would've benefited from another season in college. He could be limited to a situational pass-rusher from the defensive end position or switch to outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. He is raw but his upside will warrant a second day selection in the 2006 NFL draft.
