Background

Steve Breaston attended Woodland Hills High School in North Braddock, Pennsylvania where he was a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball, and running track. He started his last two seasons at quarterback for Woodland Hills, rushing for 1,718 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior. He completed 33 of 79 passes for 600 yards on the season and returned two punts for touchdowns. His final two years in high school, Breaston rushed for 2,545 yards and 37 touchdowns. He finished with over 5,000 all-purpose yards in that two year span. He was considered to be one of the top prospects in the state and accepted a scholarship to play football for the University of Michigan where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt. The following year he caught 38 passes for 444 yards and 3 touchdowns. He made his mark on special teams finishing third in the big ten, averaging 13.8 yards per punt return. His 45 returns for 619 yards were both school records. He was voted big ten freshman of the year by the coaches. As a sophomore, Breaston played in eleven games, missing one game with a finger injury. He finished the season with 34 receptions for 291 yards and 3 touchdowns. He finished sixth in the conference and set school records for kickoff returns and yardage with 28 returns for 689 yards. He finished fourth in the conference averaging over 12 yards per punt return with one touchdown. He set Rose Bowl records with 315 all-purpose yards and 221 kickoff return yards. As a junior, Breaston saw action in eleven games, finishing third on the team in receiving with 29 receptions for 291 yards and 2 touchdowns. He averaged 12.3 yards per punt return and 28.1 yards per kick return with one touchdown. He led the Wolverines with 1,394 all-purpose yards on the season. He set an Alamo Bowl record with 146 kickoff return yards.

Analysis

Steve Breaston is a versatile player who was a running quarterback in high school and has been a receiver and kick return specialist for Michigan the past four years. He has the speed to stretch the field and solid hands. He is an elusive open field runner who will make defenders miss and get yards after the catch. Breaston also is an outstanding return specialist with the potential to be one of the best return men available in the 2007 NFL draft. Breaston is a bit thin and he isn’t a very physical receiver. He can get pushed around by bigger, stronger defensive backs. He would benefit from hitting the gym and increasing his strength. He is a converted quarterback who is still learning the receiver position. Although he will take some time to develop as a pass catcher, Breaston has a great deal of upside as a receiver and could step in and make an immediate impact as a return specialist for the team that drafts him.
