Background

Stewart Bradley attended Highland High School in Salt Lake City, Utah where he played football and rugby. He played wing on a rugby team that won three consecutive national championships. Stewart primarily played defensive back on the football team but he also saw action at quarterback and kick returner. He had a slew of injuries in high school and was only to play his junior season as a result. He helped the team to an 11-2 record and a state championship game appearance as a junior. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Nebraska where he sat out the 2002 season as a redshirt. He returned the following season where he played middle linebacker in the spring before moving to defensive end prior to the season. He saw action in all 13 games primarily as a reserve defensive end and special teams player, recording 6 tackles on the year.. Prior to his sophomore season, Stewart was moved back to linebacker where he earned a starting position on the strong side. He finished second on the team in tackles with 67 stops on the year, despite missing half of the Baylor game due to injury. Stewart held onto his starting job for his junior season, totaling 26 tackles, 3 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles in the first 5 games. He returned an interception 43 yards for a touchdown against Wake Forest. Stewart tore his ACL against Texas Tech, effectively ending his season. He had surgery to correct and was limited to non-contact drills in the spring of 2006. Stewart returned to start all 14 games as a senior. He finished the season with 3 forced fumbles, 1 sack, and he led the team with a career high 76 tackles on the year. He was named honorable mention all-Big 12 at the conclusion of the season.

Analysis

Stewart Bradley has a good deal of experience against top competition, having started the past three seasons at the SAM linebacker position for Nebraska in the Big 12 conference. He has an excellent combination of size and strength for a linebacker. He is an intelligent player and a hard worker with a non-stop motor. He has good instincts and is a great run defender who displays good tackling technique. His strength allows him to shed blocks and get to the ball carrier. He’s a former defensive back who has the ability to drop back and cover tight ends. He can also rush the passer when needed. Stewart Bradley lacks great speed and athleticism for the linebacker position. As a result, he has limited range. Durability is going to be the biggest concern when it comes to Bradley. Injuries in high school limited him to playing just his junior season. He also had a torn ACL at Nebraska which caused him to miss the majority of his junior season. If he can stay healthy, Bradley has the tools to develop into a good SAM linebacker at the professional level. He should be a first day pick in the 2007 NFL draft.

Gocong starting strong
2007-07-27 00:19:51

Chris Gocong hasn't even made a tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles and he's already in a better position than most of his former Cal Poly teammates in the NFL. While Courtney Brown, Kyle Shotwell and Jordan Beck are likely fighting for reserve spots this preseason, Gocong opens training camp today as the Eagles' starting strongside (sam) linebacker. If Gocong, a converted defensive end who missed ...
