Background

Terna Nande attended Creston High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he played linebacker and running back on the football team. As a senior he averaged 7 yards per carry and 16 tackles per game, on his way to first team all-state honors. He helped Creston to a 39-12 record, two city championships, and one regional championship during his time there. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Miami (OH) where he started nine games as a true freshman, totaling 49 tackles and 2 sacks on the season. As a sophomore he racked up 85 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and a career high 4 interceptions on his way to second team all-MAC honors. He had another great year as a junior, finishing with 86 tackles, 3 1/2 sacks, and a career high 2 forced fumbles. He was named first team all-MAC for his performance that year. He missed half of his senior season due to a lacerated liver, finishing with 44 tackles his final season at Miami.

Analysis

Terna Nande has a great deal of experience, having started since his true freshman season for the Redhawks. He has a non-stop motor and is an outstanding athlete with the ability to make plays all over the field. He has the speed to chase ball carriers down from behind in pursuit, as well as cover tight ends and running backs coming out of the backfield. He is a sure tackler who excels at making plays in the open field. Terna lacks ideal size for a linebacker in the NFL, but he is extremely strong for a player his size and he will take on blocks. He has a tendency to be overaggressive at times which causes him to miss some tackles. Durablility may be a cause for concern after Nande missed half of his senior season because of a lacerated liver. Terna Nande should contribute immediately on special teams and could develop into a good weakside linebacker in time. His athletic ability and outstanding performance at the combine warrant at least a second day pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
