Background

Tim Day began his high school career as an offensive guard before switching to defensive end and tight end as a junior. He was a two-year starter at DE and TE and a team captain. As a senior, Day caught two touchdown passes as a tight end and sacked the quarterback 12 times on the defensive side of the ball. He was named first team all-league for the southern Nevada region. After high school, Tim went to the University of Oregon where he was a member of the scout team in 2001. He saw playing time in every game as a backup the following year; however he only caught 3 passes for 18 yards on the season. Despite battling a shoulder injury as a sophomore, Day played in all 13 games catching 23 balls for 318 yards and 3 scores. He was named honorable mention all pac-10 for his efforts that year. As a junior, Day was once again plagued by an injury the entire season, this time it was a foot injury. Tim still managed to play in all the games and produce his best season in college with 35 receptions 457 yards and 8 touchdowns. His reception total was the sixth most by a tight end in Oregon history and Day was named second team all-pac 10 for his performance. Tim Day had a down year as a senior, but he is still one of the most talented tight ends available in the 2006 NFL draft.

Analysis

Tim Day has good size and average athleticism for a tight end. He is a very good pass-catching tight end. He runs precise routes, secures the ball with his hands, and he adjusts well to poorly thrown passes. He lacks the speed to beat defenders deep, but he is an excellent redzone target and once he has the ball in his hands, Day is very skilled at getting yards after the catch. Although he is an above average blocker, this is still an area where Day can show some improvement in the future. Durability could be a cause for concern when scouts look at Tim Day. Although he has demonstrated his toughness by playing through injuries in the past, he had shoulder and foot injuries that lingered with him throughout the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Tim Day is a player who is solid but unspectacular in every area. He has the skills to develop into a good all-around tight end in the NFL and could be a first day pick in the 2006 draft.
