Background

Tim Dobbins attended Glenciff High School in Nashville, Tennessee. As a fullback he rushed for 1,438 yards over his sophomore and junior seasons, including 115 yards and a touchdown in the state championship game his sophomore season. He was named first team all-state as a linebacker his senior year and was selected to play in the Tennessee-Kentucky all-star game. He went on to play at Copiah-Lincoln Junior College where he totaled 210 tackles, 13 sacks, and 4 interceptions in his two seasons there. He transferred to Iowa State and became an immediate contributor, totaling 61 tackles, ˝ sack, and 2 interceptions as a junior. He was named big twelve “newcomer of the year” and honorable mention all big twelve for his play that season. He had an even better year as a senior, finishing off his career with 96 tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, and 1 interception.

Analysis

Tim Dobbins has a good combination of size and strength for a linebacker. He does a good job of reading and reacting and is very strong at the point of attack. He does a good job of using his hands to shed blocks and get to the ball carrier. Dobbins is a great run defender who hits hard and is a fundamentally sound tackler. He is a hard worker who displays good technique and has a non-stop motor. Dobbins was a JUCO transfer just two years ago, so he only has two years of experience against division I competition. He has good speed for a middle linebacker but he needs to improve his coverage technique as he can be a liability in that area. If he doesn’t improve his coverage ability he could be just a two down linebacker at the professional level. He should be a second day pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
